DeepWind funding supports investment readiness, not construction

£3 million backs preparations for floating wind test site

AIRTO has announced £3 million in UKRI Infrastructure Fund support for its member EMEC to advance the proposed DeepWind test site. The two-year award covers engineering, environmental, regulatory and commercial work needed to reach a final investment decision and prepare for delivery by 2030.

The announcement identifies a gap in European test sites offering wind and sea conditions representative of projects in the UK pipeline. DeepWind is intended to let developers test and validate floating and deepwater technologies before commercial deployment; the award does not establish an operational facility.

Why this matters for policymakers

  • Investment scrutiny Assess preparatory milestones separately from construction and operational readiness.
  • Testing capacity Consider how representative offshore conditions could strengthen technology validation.
  • Delivery oversight Track environmental, regulatory and governance readiness alongside engineering progress.
