NHS Pilot Expands Rapid Brain Tumour Testing

An NHS pilot expanding across England will evaluate rapid genomic testing that could classify brain tumours within 24 hours, compared with a reported current average of 26 days. NHS England has awarded £2.1 million to the supporting Network of Excellence, with testing initially planned at five specialist centres.

University of Birmingham and University Hospitals Birmingham teams will examine health economics, implementation and genomic training. Their existing tissue pipeline supports rapid analysis during surgery. The programme aims to inform commissioning recommendations; adoption at all neuropathology centres in England remains an ambition, not an established outcome.

Why this matters for policymakers

  • Analysis: commissioning Require evidence of diagnostic performance, clinical benefit and cost-effectiveness before wider adoption.
  • Analysis: workforce Plan laboratory capacity and genomic training alongside expansion.
  • Analysis: access Monitor regional access and turnaround times as centres join.
