UK roadmap sets course for metamaterials commercialisation
Manufacturing, assurance and skills underpin plans to translate research into industrial use

The UK Metamaterials Commercialisation Roadmap sets out priorities for turning research into industrial technologies, the University of Birmingham reports. Developed by the Metamaterials Strategy Action Group, it identifies five areas for action: ecosystem, innovation, manufacturing, assurance and skills.
Metamaterials use deliberately engineered structures to enable capabilities beyond conventional materials alone, with potential applications in light, sound, sensing and energy. Birmingham co-leads the UK Metamaterials Network with Exeter, connecting more than 1,300 members. The roadmap calls for coordinated action on manufacturing scale-up and commercial adoption while sustaining the research base.
Why this matters for policymakers
- Manufacturing pathways Assess how scale-up support can connect research with industrial demand.
- Skills Consider the capabilities needed to translate designs into manufacturable technologies.
- Assurance Examine how testing and validation can support confidence in adoption.
