Inspiring Futures: NWS Champions STEM Engagement for the Next Generation
Nuclear Waste Services (NWS) is taking an active role in shaping the future workforce by delivering impactful STEM outreach activities across the UK. Designed to ignite interest in science, technology, engineering, and maths, NWS’s programmes aim to empower young people—many of whom face limited opportunities—with hands-on experiences and real-world exposure to the nuclear and environmental sectors.
Notable initiatives include a collaborative Science and Careers fair in Whitehaven, co-hosted with Sellafield Ltd and the local council, as well as an immersive three-day work experience at the Low Level Waste Repository in Cumbria. Students aged 18 to 24 engaged directly with professionals, explored environmental protection work, and received career development support such as CV writing and interview preparation.
Additionally, NWS represented the nuclear sector at the Big Bang Fair 2025 in Birmingham, connecting with over 30,000 students to highlight the diverse opportunities available in nuclear careers.
Through these outreach efforts, NWS not only supports community engagement but also helps cultivate a new generation of skilled professionals equipped to manage the UK’s radioactive waste safely and sustainably.
