Mathematics and Sustainability: Reflections on the First IMA Climate-Focused Meeting

The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) recently held its inaugural meeting on “Mathematics for Climate, Environment and Sustainability” on 23rd September 2025 at De Morgan House, London, with online attendance also available. This event marked the launch of the IMA’s new Special Interest Group (SIG) dedicated to these critical areas.

The programme featured keynote presentations from leading figures in academia and industry, such as Professor Valerio Lucarini (University of Leicester), Dr Lindesay Scott-Hayward (University of St Andrews), and Alex Bardell (Sustainability Advocate). In the afternoon, the event transitioned into a collaborative format, with group discussions and panels focused on identifying research and policy priorities and how the mathematical sciences community can effectively contribute to sustainability efforts.

The meeting attracted significant engagement from researchers, policymakers, and practitioners, sparking conversations about future directions for the SIG and the role of mathematics in addressing environmental challenges. Recordings from the event are available here, and the official report can be accessed via the IMA website.

Key Point for Policymakers:
Policymakers should recognise the vital role of mathematical modelling and data analysis in shaping effective climate and environmental policy. The IMA’s SIG provides a platform for aligning academic insight with policy needs, fostering evidence-based decision-making.
