Standardised Radioactive Waste Containers Set to Transform UK Nuclear Decommissioning

A new UK-wide initiative led by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) is introducing a Standard Waste Container Catalogue (SWCC) to unify the design and procurement of radioactive waste containers. Developed collaboratively by Sellafield Ltd and Nuclear Waste Services (NWS), the catalogue establishes, for the first time, a consistent suite of approved container designs suitable for varying levels of radioactive waste.

The initiative aims to improve long-term safety, reduce costs, and enhance operational efficiency across the NDA estate. A key benefit is ensuring compatibility with future geological disposal facilities, reducing the risk of costly and complex repackaging in the future. Standardisation will also support cross-site collaboration by enabling shared handling systems and processes.

Governance of the catalogue will be overseen by the newly established Waste Container Management Body (WCMB), which will manage updates and new design approvals. While not an immediate fix for all existing container challenges, the SWCC forms part of a long-term strategy to streamline waste management and strengthen supply chain efficiency.

By replacing multiple bespoke container designs previously developed by individual sites, the initiative is expected to deliver economies of scale, reduce duplication, and provide lasting strategic and financial benefits.

Key Points for Policymakers

  • Standardisation supports long-term nuclear waste strategy and geological disposal readiness.
  • Reduces lifecycle costs by avoiding future repackaging and duplication of designs.
  • Enhances cross-site efficiency and supply chain coordination across the NDA estate.
  • Demonstrates the value of centralised governance and collaboration in complex infrastructure systems.
