Bright SCIdea Challenge Supports the Next Generation of Science Entrepreneurs

The Bright SCIdea Challenge, organised by SCI, provides university students in the UK and internationally with the opportunity to develop an innovative science-based idea into a business plan and compete for a £5,000 prize.

Teams of three or four students receive free business training covering areas including marketing, intellectual property, financial management and commercialisation. Those producing the strongest business plans are invited to pitch their ideas to a panel of experienced business leaders and innovators.

The programme responds to the growing need for scientists to develop commercial and entrepreneurial skills alongside their academic expertise. By helping students understand how scientific ideas can be translated into viable products and businesses, the challenge supports innovation, economic growth and the development of new solutions to societal problems.

Applications for the 2027 challenge close on 11 November 2026, with the final taking place at SCI in London on 23 March 2027. The initiative offers an example of how collaboration between universities, industry and professional organisations can help promising scientific ideas progress beyond the laboratory.
